Even without its perennial top board, Vassily Ivanchuk, who preferred to play in a draughts tournament rather than chess, Ukraine are toppling down top teams, Russia in Round 4, and now the defending champion, China, in Round 5.

GM Eugene Torre may not have been able to continue with his winning streak, as he was held to a draw by GM Bernal Gonzales Acosta of Costa Rica, but the rest of the games were wins for the Philippines. Thus, the score was 3.5-0.5. [replay]
This win places the Philippines 43rd among the Open Section teams, and will be up against the 79th seed, South Africa.

There were a few but big upsets in Round 4. The 5th seed Ukraine defeated the number 1 seed Russia, while the 17th seed Czech Republic drew against the 2nd seed United States as all their games ended in draws.

It was Shania Mae Mendoza’s first game in the Baku Olympiad, and she won her game against Maili-Jade Ouellet of Canada, to even the score 2-2 in their match. [replay]
The Philippines Women’s team are ranked 44th after this Round 4 draw. They will be up against Algeria in Round 5.

Although WIM Janelle Mae Frayna was able to stand her ground against grandmasters in the last two rounds of Baku 2016 Chess Olympiad, the other team members weren’t lucky enough as they faced their much stronger opponents.
